From patroonship farmland to an 1803 town
Guilderland's land was part of the 1629 Rensselaerswyck patroonship long before it was its own town -- Dutch settlers farmed along the Normans Kill from the late 1600s, and the town itself wasn't incorporated until February 26, 1803, when it split away from Watervliet. The name honors Gelderland, the Dutch province tied to the Van Rensselaer family, at the suggestion of then-Lieutenant Governor Jeremiah Van Rensselaer.
Heating a Guilderland home built across two different eras
Older farmhouses near the Normans Kill corridor and the town's original roads can carry heating systems added in stages over more than a century, while the newer subdivisions that fill out much of modern Guilderland are on more uniform, single-era systems. Either way, sizing a furnace, heat pump, or AC system for a Capital District winter means accounting for whatever insulation and construction era is actually in place, not a generic assumption.
