An iron-manufacturing boom that built Troy's rowhouses
Troy incorporated as a city in 1816, having adopted its classical name in 1789, and grew into a major American iron center anchored by the Troy Iron and Nail Factory on the Wynantskill. Henry Burden ran that operation from 1822 and patented a wrought-iron nail machine in 1825, and the ironworking jobs that followed filled Troy with brick rowhousing built for factory workers -- housing stock that still defines much of the city's older neighborhoods.
